Israel Bruddah Iz Kamakawiwo‘ole nació en Hawai el 20 de mayo de 1959, siendo uno de los pocos hawaianos de pura sangre nativa. Su primer grupo musical lo formaría de adolescente, junto a su hermano Skippy y otros amigos, haciéndose llamar The Makaha Sons of Ni'ihau. Para 1990 este simpático hawaiano, también conocido como Iz, editó su primer álbum como solista, titulado Ka'ano'i, gracias al cual recibiría varios premios. Aun así su más destacado trabajo vendría luego en 1993 con Facing Future, en el cual figura este magnífico tema que escuchamos ahora mismo.
Somewhere over the rainbow/What a Wonderful World se convirtió en su mayor éxito, conocida por muchos a través de películas y series, como 50 primeras citas, Descubriendo a Forrester, ¿Conoces a Joe Black? y Tienes un e-mail.
Esta maravillosa versión que escuchamos es una mezcla de dos clásicos de la música. Por un lado Over the rainbow, originalmente compuesta para la banda de sonido de El Mago de Oz, donde fue interpretada por Judy Garland y compuesta por Harold Arlen y Yip Harburg. Por otro, What a Wonderful World, de la cual no necesitamos dar muchos detalles, quizás solo agregar que fue escrita por Bob Thiele y George David Weiss, pero que la inigualable destreza de Louis Amstrong es lo que la hace tan especial. En este caso, Iz nos entrega una versión que fusiona los ritmos del Caribe con los del reggae, y forma una idílica melodía cargada de una peculiar serenidad, paz, calma y honestidad. Aspectos claves de la vida de este hawaiano que se caracterizo por su alegría y positivismo, y por su devoción a su pueblo natal y al resto del mundo. Un sello propio que lo marco y seria reconocido por todo el mundo.

Lamentablemente la vida de Iz tomaría un giro trágico en 1997, tras sufrir una serie de problemas respiratorios falleciendo con solo 38 años de edad. Sus cenizas serian arrojadas al océano frente a la playa de Makua, dejando en los aires el recuerdo de su gran espíritu, y su sensibilidad con el mundo, que tan fácil pueden percibirse en su música y su voz.

Podríamos probar cerrando los ojos, o asomándonos y mirar el cielo. Quizás el día cambie, y al menos, por unos minutos, podamos sentirnos sobre un arcoíris y ver que el mundo puede ser un maravilloso lugar…
